- The Tsunami Disaster and Politics in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka was one of the countries worst affected by the tsunami disaster.
The government is now trying to exploit the situation to its advantage,
but the huge wave that struck the country has brought out many
contradictions and prepared to further destabilise an already very
unstable regime. By R.P. Lankaloka and Gloria de Silva (January 20, 2005)

- The Tsunami Disaster – Horror Without End

Ten days after the devastating tsunami that wreaked havoc in the Indian
Ocean on December 26, 2004 it is becoming increasingly clear that much
more could have been done to avert the massive destruction and the death
of 146,000 people (so far) in the region. It is also clear that a lot more
could be done to assist in aid and relief after the disaster. By Rob Lyon.

- Second National Congress of the Venezuelan CMR a huge success
For the Venezuelan Socialist Revolution!

Over the weekend of December 11 and 12 the Second National Congress of the
Revolutionary Marxist Current (CMR) took place in Caracas. The Congress
demonstrated the qualitative advance of the organisation with a number of
new local cells being established and an increase in both the membership
and in the political level of the current in general. It bodes well for

Sharon brings Labour into the government
An attempt to shore up the glaring crisis in the system

The Sharon government is held together by a shaky coalition of parties. In
the past period some have left, bringing his government close to collapse.
Now Labour has come to the rescue. With it it brings the leadership of the
Histadrut, the trade union federation. It is an attempt to hold back the
inevitable explosion of class struggle which will come in the next period.

Marxism and Psychoanalysis
Notes on Wilhelm Reich’s Life and Works

For a long period in his life Wilhelm Reich considered himself a Marxist.
He applied the scientific method of Marxism to his research into
Psychoanalysis and this led him to break with many of the theories of
Freud. At one stage he came close to Trotsky, but then drifted away. Under
intense persecution he eventually broke with Marxism and even revised some
of his earlier brilliant insights. Alessandro D'Aloia looks at the rise
and fall of Reich. (October, 2004)

National Labor Board Rules Against Graduate Student Unions</b>
In labor news, the National Labor Relations Board reversed itself yesterday and determined that graduate students at private universities do not have the right to unionize. This reverses a 2000 decision by the board that led to students at New York University forming the first graduate employees union. The American Federation of Teachers called yesterday's decision "outrageous." An official from the group said, "These people obviously are workers. If members of the N.L.R.B. can't recognize a worker when they see one, they shouldn't be on a national labor board."

- New Trotsky Book out now!

Wellred publications has just brought out My Life by Leon Trotsky, with a
preface by Esteban Volkov and introduction by Alan Woods. The retail price
is £14.99, but readers have the opportunity of getting the book for an
introductory price of £10.
Written in the first year of Trotsky's exile, it is a narrative which
moves from his childhood, his education in the "universities" of Tsarist
prisons, Siberia and then foreign exile - to his involvement in the
European revolutionary movement and his central role in the tempestuous
1905 revolution and the Bolshevik victory in October 1917 and the civil
war which followed. It contains the earliest authoritative account of the
rise of Stalinism and the expulsion of the Left Opposition, who heroically
fought for the ideas and traditions of Lenin.

- In the Cause of Labour
History of British Trade Unionism - Chapter 18

The victory of Churchill in the 1951 general election was to mark the
beginning of thirteen years of uninterrupted Tory rule. One of the main
reasons for this remarkable success was the world economic upswing that
was underway, which enormously benefited British capitalism, masked its
deficiencies, as well as serving to reinforce illusions in the capitalist
system itself. Within the organised Labour movement, these favourable
economic conditions served, in turn, to bolster the position of the
right-wing leaders of the trade unions and the Labour Party. By Rob Sewell

- In the Cause of Labour: History of British Trade Unionism - Chapter 17

The historic victory for the Labour Party in the 1945 general election saw
unprecedented scenes of jubilation. Even at the opening session of the
House of Commons, the massed ranks of the Labour benches, to the horror of
the Tories, celebrated the event by singing the Red Flag. There was
tremendous optimism everywhere. For the working class, there was a deep
yearning for change. Now, with a massive parliamentary majority, this
appeared to be Labour's "finest hour". By Rob Sewell (November, 2003)

El capitalismo avanza en China sobre la sangre y el sudor de las masas

degeneración política y su alejamiento absoluto del marxismo y del

unas condiciones similares a las que existían cuando China era un
territorio saqueado por las potencias imperialistas. Es más, en el último

- Lenin on the National Question

As part of our commemoration of the centenary of Lenin's death, we are
publishing a series of articles about his life and ideas. Lenin not only
led the first succesful socialist revolution, but he also made an
enourmous contribution to Marxist theory. The present article deals with
the important contribution he made on the national question, and how such
a correct stand on this issue guaranteed the success of the Bolshevick
Party in October 1917. By Rob Sewell (June 2004)

Unity among imperialists? A pipedream!

At recent gatherings of the major powers (from the D-Day celebrations to

this? Is there really a common position developing? Yossi Schwartz

Militant mood among Italian workers
We are publishing two articles from the Italian Marxist journal
Falcemartello which give a clear indication of the level of militancy that
is developing among the workers in Italy. Both the FIAT Melfi and the
Alitalia disputes highlight the growing contradiction between the will to
struggle on the part of the workers and the constant striving to hold down
the movement on the part of the union leaders. This cannot last for ever.
(June 11, 2004)

- FIAT Melfi workers go back to work with heads held high!

In an earlier article we reported on the tremendous struggle of the FIAT
Melfi workers. Since then the workers have gone back, having gained some
important victories, but nowhere near to what they could have won had the
trade union leadership reflected the same level of militancy as the
workers. By paolo Grassi (May 13, 2004)

- Italy - Alitalia workers’ struggle

Another example of heightened militancy of the Italian workers. But again,
also an example of how the trade union leaders play the role of dampening
down the mood rather than building up the struggle and spreading it. By
Paolo Grassi (May 6, 2004)

- A Farewell to Ronald Reagan

Former US president Ronald Reagan passed away on June 5. The state
funeral, which was little more than a crude exercise in propaganda on the
part of the Bush administration, was held the following weekend. The
historical revision at the ceremony was astonishing. The working class of
the United States and the world must know and understand the real legacy
and meaning of the Reagan years in order to understand the lessons of the
past and lead the struggle against capitalism and imperialism today. by

History of British Trade Unionism - Chapter 14

The defeat of the 1926 General Strike left the miners totally isolated.
They were forced to fight on alone for a further seven months before being
literally starved back to work on the owners’ terms. The betrayal of 1926
also dealt a terrible blow to the morale of the British working class
generally. As the reports from Yorkshire strikers explained: “The spirit
was magnificent, and consternation and dismay prevailed when the news that
the strike was called off had been confirmed… Alarm – fear – despair – a
victorious army disarmed and handed over to its enemies.” By Rob Sewell

A massive rally in Caracas by supporters of the Bolivarian Revolution on
Sunday marked the beginning of the campaign for the recall referendum in

signatures to trigger the presidential recall referendum. On the same day,
president Chavez accepted the decision and called on revolutionaries to

- Where is Morocco going?

When King Hassan II died at the end of the last century all expectations
of change were concentrated in the figure of his son Mohammed VI.
Fascination grew over this young and apparently modern monarch who
announced he would transform his country, establish the rule of law and
lead it successfully into the 21st century. Expectations were running
high. Only one year after his arrival, the royal reform movement stalled -
the alliance of the Throne and the socialists has not delivered the
results the masses had hoped and waited for. This is a recipe for future
explosions in the class struggle. By Jean Duval (June, 2004)

A letter written to the Italian Trotskyists in 1930 in which Trotsky deals
with the question of the Constituent Assembly and the perspectives for
Italy at that time. He severely criticises those who attempted to mix the

Mussolini regime collapsed. (May 14, 1930).
